The Scientific Center of Monaco to participate in Medchange project for the Mediterranean Sea
The Scientific Center of Monaco in cooperation with other French and Spanish scientific firms is involved in an important program entitled “Medchange” which is supported financially by the Agence Nationale de reserche francaise (the French National Research Agency). Its purpose is to record and monitor the sea’s temperature variations and changes to try to determine what provoked in 1999, 2003, and 2005 unusually high degree of sea life mortality. The Scientific Center of Monaco is an expert in this research field. Its renowned staff includes four scientists, one of whom, Professor Denis Allemand, is a recent member of the Academia Europa. The first activities of the Medchange program were held at the Oceanographic Museum of Marseille in order to focus on the important climatic changes that affects our planet and and which may contribute to increased death of sea life. The Medchange program has been financed for three years and the program expects to measure the Mediterranean red coral at various depths, analyse the environment in the field, and conduct laboratory research. The coastal ecosystem is the speciality of the Scientific Center of Monaco which hopes to produce major conclusions that will be adopted in regard to the Mediterranean sea to improve its environmental quality.
