The Centre of gerontological co-ordination of Monaco

The Centre of gerontological co-ordination of Monaco, destined for the over 65s living in the Principality opened its doors on Monday 4th September. Its main purpose is to establish an assistance plan for the elderly, based on a medical social assessment, by co-ordinating action between the actors on the ground, without overriding them or the city services already set up. The Centre boasts a multidisciplinary team (a geriatrician, a psychologist, a social worker…) and is under the management of Professor Alain Pesce, the Head of the Geriatric Unit in the Princess Grace Hospital. Solidarity, particularly as far as the elderly is concerned, is one of the priorities of the Monaco Government. By the way, in the Principality, the over 65s represent 22.5 % of the population (census 2000), namely 7181 people. This figure should reach 7900 by 2010 and 8600 by 2020, according to forecasts.
