Youngest Grimaldi becomes a special representative for AIDS

HSH Princess Stéphanie of Monaco has been nominated to be a special representative for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). The Princess will go to Geneva next week where she is expected to accept the nomination from UNAIDS Executive Director, Dr Peter Piot. More...The post is for two years during which time the Princess will be working in sectors aimed at reducing current discrimination against people who are HIV positive. She is already well known for her work in Monaco as President of the Fight AIDS Monaco association.

Rally change

Small businesses on the col de Turini were upset to learn that the world renowned 2007 Rallye de Monte-Carlo will not pass trough their area. The event, which kicks off the world rally championship season, has been drawing crowds to the col de Turini for more than 70 year and is one of the biggest sources of winter income. It’s a big blow to this small community, particularly after last year’s decision by the Winter Trial rally to plan its circuit going through Austria rather than Monaco.

The tiny territory of Monaco is no stranger to big, ambitious construction projects that have allowed her to expand : 20% of the 2sqkm has been won from the sea ; 3,5 ha added at Le Portier by 1961 ; 9ha added in the Larvotto beach/Le Sporting zone by 1974 ; 22ha also wrested from the sea to create Fontvieille by 1971.

As Europe sweltered in the luly heatwave, the congregation of St Paul’s Angelican Church were sitting pretty and cool. Installation of an air conditioning and heating system was part of an interior restoration of the church which is almost completed at the cost of around euros 100, 000. (more…)

Monaco Sovereign backs ‘save the dolphin’ campaign

Prince Albert II of Monaco and the conservation group, ACCOBAMS, have collaborated in an effort to preserve marine wildlife in the Mediterranean. The campaign was officially launched on the 17th September but will continue throughout 2007. (more…)
