Monte Carlo Tennis Masters threat
ATP restructuring plans could see Monaco tournament downgraded. A black cloud hangs over the 101st Monte Carlo Tennis Masters tournament, due to begin in Monaco this Sunday, April 15th until the 22nd. The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) which organizes the Masters Series of men’s tournaments is causing a furor with its plans to restructure the circuit by 2009. If it has its way, both Monaco and Hamburg could see their tournaments downgraded, while Shanghai in China has been approved to host the ATP’s Asian Masters Series tournament starting in 2009. The Masters Series is the next most prestigious circuit for men after the four Grand Slams - the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Both Hamburg and Monaco are taking legal action against the plan.
