Monaco Humanitaire 2008, the Principality shows solidarity
Under the light of the large glass roof of the Grande Verrière in the Grimaldi Forum Monaco, a brand new exhibition is on show. Until 27th April, 200 photos relate the action undertaken by all the Monegasque humanitarian associations. “Monaco et l’humanitaire 1958-2008” was officially opened by Prince Albert II on Tuesday 18th March. On the same day, the Office of International Cooperation and Development, called together, as each year, all the associations to unite their action.
Jean-Claude Coutausse, Duncan Willetts, Nick Danziger… Monaco Humanitaire 2008, the association set up three years ago to put together the project for the exhibition, did not hesitate to send out globally these top photographic reporters to illustrate the humanitarian action undertaken by the Principality. Under the Verrière of the Grimaldi Forum, their photos in both black & white and colour, are displayed next to those taken over time by the members of the associations. In all, 200 photos have been selected from several thousand. “The choice was very difficult”, explains Amadeo Turello, the exhibition’s artistic advisor. “We had to report on certain key projects but also illustrate the diversity of the associations whilst at the same time give rhythm to the exhibition. We weren’t able to choose an image solely because of its poignant nature or photographic quality”.
The photos that were not selected are however being shown continuously as a slide show on the multiple screens displaying a giant map of the world. To complete the educational approach, three interactive terminals have been set up. Again showing a map of the world, visitors can access the different countries and Monegasque humanitarian associations working there, including photos and a brief presentation. In total, twenty or so Monegasque organisations working in Afghanistan, Armenia, Ethiopia, Russia, Niger and the Philippines can be viewed…(see box). This exhibition pays tribute to the many volunteers. Just as it does to the Sovereign Prince: “Monaco Humanitaire 2008 is as a tribute paid for the fiftieth birthday of H.S.H. Prince Albert II, who intends to place greater focus on humanitarian action, as he mentioned in his accession speech in July 2005″ said Cherif Jahlan, the Secretary General of Monaco Humanitaire 2008.
